Lawrence Binding

President, Partner,
Director of Brand Planning

President of Commotion, Lawrence brings 25 years of marketing and advertising experience to the group. The first half of his career was spent in Toronto working for leading advertising agencies Saatchi & Saatchi, Carder Gray and DDB Needham. Brands he managed include Toyota Canada, Canadian Club Whisky, Ballantine’s Scotch as well as Bank of Montreal. A hi-light of this period was being a member of the team that launched Air Miles in Canada. Winning Bayer’s Adalat and Cipro business in the early 90s while at Carder Gray spurred an interest and eventually a total focus on healthcare marketing. An entrepreneur at heart, Lawrence started Cossette’s Healthcare Group in 1993/4, launched Marketel Pharma in 1998 and started Commotion Communications in 1999.

We believe that coded deeply into our DNA is the need to make good decisions quickly. Call it part of our survival code. While we humans have evolved, that part of our code remains as deeply embedded as ever.

What was once "survival of the fittest" is now "success to the brightest". And today, we all STILL want (need) to make good decisions, quickly. It's in our DNA.

The Marketing Lesson: Make the decision easy for the customer. The customer will love you for it.

Scott Bradford

Scott Bradford

Vice President,
Creative Director

The driving force behind Commotion's creative, Scott has been in the ad biz more than 30 years. Fourteen years ago, after a very successful first career in consumer advertising, he decided to focus on healthcare and created long lasting brand campaigns for companies like Astra, Pharmacia, and Bayer.

Since joining Commotion in 2001, Scott's pharmaceutical experience has expanded to include many Canadian and U.S. brands in wide range of categories - GI, oncology, multiple sclerosis, anti-infectives, lab diagnostics, HRT, osteoporosis, diabetes, medical devices, and weight loss.

Now that two of his children are off to university, Scott and his wife have added a puppy to the family in order to maintain the healthy blend of frenzy and sleep deprivation that they have come to thrive on over the past 20-something years.

Maybe because I grew up in farm country, I always thought of good branding/advertising as a means to plant a seed or an idea in the customer’s head and then follow through to help it grow. Left alone the idea will whither, but when properly tended to it can become very powerful. I guess in the true sense of the metaphor successful sales and/or awareness is the harvest. (I was always pretty good with the pitchfork ;-)

One of the more memorable photo shoots I did involved Alpha-Bits cereal. As part of the concept we placed the letters into a cereal bowl, with milk, to spell out words. As it turns out, Alpha-Bits doesn't actually contain a whole alphabet, but rather a limited range of about a dozen characters. The selection process was interesting as well, as most are misshapen (Is that an "E". or a "P"?) or pulverized.

The best characters made it into the printed product. The rejects, well, they made it into my stomach.

Clive Palmer

Clive Palmer

Art Director

A native of the UK, Clive relocated to Canada the year the Leafs last won the cup … and is starting to think it's his fault they haven't won it since. The majority of his design career was spent in the Safety and Loss Prevention field before joining our team here at Commotion. His client roster has included the likes of Wal-Mart, K-Mart, The Bay, Zellers, HomeSense, Home Depot, Lowe's, Pep Boys, Winners, TJ Maxx, TK Maxx, JC Penny, Macys and Jacob.

During the summer months you can find Clive and his bicycle on the trails and streets throughout the Cambridge area.

Memory almost full…

Just before heading into work one day I had heard that King Louis XIV of France apparently only had three baths during his entire lifetime. With a mind for the trivial I was quite proud of my newfound information, stored it away, and shared this tidbit with my co-workers upon arrival.

When I sat down at my computer was when the trouble began. After staring blankly at my monitor for a minute I realized I NEEDED to upgrade the hard drive in my head. The IT person was more than happy to remind me of my email password.

When I started my graduate studies, I was keen to get my lab work started because that’s where I thought I wanted to be. The first holiday weekend, there I was in the lab looking after my cell cultures. The only other soul in the building was the Chair of the department. As we passed one another along the deserted hallway, I heard him mumble “You’re dumber than you look.” Lesson learned.

Seasonally I always enjoyed decorating my office cubicle. One Christmas, I brought in a 6-foot tall, fuzzy, red stocking to hang. There was a column in my cubicle that was the perfect place - it looked so festive! The next day I came into work and the office was freezing. The receptionist called in a heating company and initially they couldn’t find the problem. Eventually the service technician located and unveiled the thermostat from behind my fuzzy stocking. Oops! I guess that ugly box I covered was actually serving a function – LOL.
